“African Americans: Seeing and Seen” at the Danforth Museum of Art Print E-mail

“African Americans: Seeing and Seen, 1766–1916,” an incisive overview of images of African Americans as both artists and subjects, features several of our African-American items:

• Washington Crossing the Delaware, an 1859 oil on board tribute to Emanuel Leutze’s 1851 masterpiece, which celebrates Washington’s surprise attack against the enemy on Christmas Eve 1776. The identity of the black rower near Washington’s right knee has been debated for years.
• A sixth plate tintype photograph, ca. 1863-65, of a seated African American Union soldier holding his rifle, housed in an ornate gutta-percha case.
• Phillis Wheatley’s Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, the first published book of poetry by an African-American and the first published work of any kind by an African-American woman.

The Danforth Museum of Art is located in Framingham, Massachusetts and the exhibit runs through May 30th.
