Abraham Lincoln’s Inaugural Address (Harper's Weekly) Print E-mail

“The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battle-field and patriot grave to every living heart and hearth-stone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature”

Harper’s Weekly, complete March 16, 1861 issue, with article on page 165 containing the full text of Lincoln’s Inaugural address (slavery, secession, Dred Scott, the Constitution). Illustrations include: Winslow Homer: Inaugural Procession…Passing the Gate of the Capitol, ftpg. Homer: Presidents Buchanan & Lincoln Entering the Senate Chamber Before the Inauguration. Homer: The Inauguration of Abraham Lincoln, March 4, 1861, p168-169 – the Navy Yard at Norfolk, Virginia – U.S. frigate ‘Sabine’ off Fort Pickens – Fort Waschita, Texas – Fort Arbuckle, Texas – Fort Davis, Texas, the Washington Arsenal.

Because Harper’s was so successful and so beautifully printed, a large number were saved. They are still readily available to collectors. Any other document with such great content and illustrations would be many times the price.
