“ John Brown Saw Slavery through no mist or cloud, but in a light of infinite brightness, which left no one of its ten thousand horrors concealed.”

Summary:

Douglass had known John Brown through abolitionist circles but disapproved of his plan to foment a slave revolt. He thought the raid on Harper’s Ferry to be a grave mistake that would inflame public opinion against the abolitionist movement. Though they had their differences, by 1883, it is obvious that Douglass had some perspective on Brown’s legacy and his contribution to the end to “that peculiar institution” in America.

Frederick Douglass (1817[?]-1895), Autograph Quotation Signed “Frederick Douglass,” 1883.
