Historical Background:
The eldest and only surviving child of the President, Robert Todd Lincoln (1843-1926) became a millionaire corporate attorney. Strongly opposed to the growth in the trade union movement, he supported his friend, the railroad passenger-car manufacturer George Pullman during the Pullman Strike . At the latter's 1897 death, Lincoln became president of the Pullman Company, retiring to the position of chairman of the board in 1911.
