Historical Background: During the "Age of Jackson" the United States economy was still dominated by agriculture. Well over 90% of the population lived in rural areas and were engaged in agricultural pursuits. Even much of our industry, because it relied on water power, was located in the countryside. Farming activities were primitive. Technology, including machinery for threshing and grinding grain, improved plow designs, and methods of irrigation, proved invaluable to the American farmer before the days of steam and gasoline powered machinery.
