Inventory# 20999    $3,600

Waiting for a summons from President Pierce, Buchanan sends this romantic and playful letter to a young female acquaintance:

Wheatland, near Lancaster 5 May 1853

My dear Miss Wallerston/

The only reason why I have not ‘ere this answered your spicy, agreeable & interesting letter, was the confident belief that I should soon enjoy the pleasure of a tete a tete with your ladyship. On my last brief visit to Washington, although occupied day & night with business, I had twice fixed a time to pay you my willing devoirs; but on each occasion was interrupted. I expect daily to be called to Washington, & should I not arrive late in the night, I shall not sleep there without first having presented myself at your shrine. My apparent neglect has given me real pain...I would have remained another day in Washington, but was obliged to be in Philadelphia, by appointment.

Miss Hells (?) & myself are jogging on together after the old hum drum but to me most agreeable fashion. Harriet has been absent in Philadelphia since the middle of January [ has not yet returned. Company is just arriving [ I shall close my letter rather than wait for another mail. Farewell! until next we meet, which I hope will be very soon...With sentiments of affectionate & respectful regard, I remain as ever your friend.
