Gillmore writes to a colleague prior to the flag raising ceremonies:

"I think I had better go up to 'Sumter' early in the morning and look after the preparations there. I will therefore go up in my own boat, & join you at or before 9 o'clock."

Historical Background: Gillmore had seen extensive action in the Sumter area earlier in the war, taking part in the Port Royal expedition and the unsuccessful assaults on Charelston in 1863 and 1864. He was injured while fighting in the Shenandoah Valley campaign in 1864, and returned to the Department of the South in February 1865, where he was able to be present at the dramatic re-raising of the U.S. flag over Fort Sumter on April 14.
