“…We are rejoicing with trembling over the late victories which have crowned our army. But still Corinth is a bugbear to me, and the desperate state of Southern feeling as to their losses & future prospects, will make them fight like desperadoes for their cities on the coast. My strongest hope of ultimate success arises from the belief that by this war slavery is to be forever crushed & put away. We planned to put down rebellion, and a Holy God planned his infinite wisdom, as I fully believe, to make this rebellion a means to a greater end. Therefore my faith is strong that out civil rights will be maintained, and established, as a way of educating our people to the higher duty of destroying oppression, of giving that freedom to others we have so struggled for ourselves…”
