Daniel Adams Butterfield (1831–1901) was a New York businessman, Union general in the Civil War, and Assistant U.S. Treasurer in New York. He commanded a brigade at Manassas, and led a corps in the desperate assault on Marye’s Heights during the Battle of Fredericksburg.  He is credited with composing “Taps,” probably the most famous bugle call ever written.
