University of Virginia Diploma of Charles Marshall, Lee’s Aide-De-Camp

Summary: Signed by William Wertenbaker, Secretary of the Faculty and University Librarian, Edward H. Courtenay, professor of mathematics, and Gessner Harrison, chair of the faculty.

Charles Marshall was appointed aide-de-camp on March 21, 1862, and was with General Lee through the war. Marshall was the only Confederate in the McLean House besides Lee. The next morning, with an orderly posted outside Lee’s ambulance to give him privacy, Marshall wrote General Orders No. 9 - Lee’s farewell to his troops.
