A rare handwritten copy of the Thirteenth Amendment, recently acquired by Seth Kaller Inc. for collector David Rubenstein, will be on view at the New-York Historical Society from February 1 to April 1.

On May 18, 1860, while sitting in this armchair, Abraham Lincoln learned that he had received the Republican nomination for president of the United States. This was Lincoln’s favorite seat at the Illinois State Journal, where he frequently caught up on news and discussed local and national affairs. When the newspaper donated this rustic chair to the Lincoln Memorial Collection in 1886, the editor observed “We shall be happy if you can find some man to sit in it who is anywhere near as great as Lincoln.”

“We have impowered Our Trusty & Wellbeloved Major Edmund Andros . . . to take into . . . possession the place . . . called by the Dutch New Netherlands, but by Our Subjects New York . . .”

Charles II orders the Lord Keeper to affix the Great Seal of England to the commission of Edmund Andros, who has been empowered to take possession of New Netherlands from the Dutch. With this warrant, the King set into motion the birth of the English province of New York.
